Once again, things have gone quiet here, and really for a lot of my online activities. Between my son's birthday, a visit from my mom, the end of the school year rapidly approaching, a secret gift, and a couple of design things that I really need to keep quiet until they are released, I haven't had much time, or ability to discuss anything.
Now, however, the secret gift has been given, and I can talk to you a bit about Ella Funt, a pattern by Pamela Wynne. This was made for a special little guy, named Teddy, who was born near in mid April. Elephants have a special meaning to their family, so this sweater was a perfect fit for their family.
I chose to make the 12-18 month size, but I really think this size will likely fit a 2-3 year old. I worked the pattern in Knit Picks Brava Sport, with Solstice Heather as my main color, and accents of Orange, Canary, and Dove Heather. I made a couple of simple changes to the pattern, introducing the Orange and Canary in stripes in the ribbing of the sweater. To make the stripes nice and clean, I used a tutorial about knitting clean stripes in ribbing from Webs, which resulted in really lovely stripes.
Overall, I really liked knitting this pattern, though I found the acrylic yarn a bit challenging for the color work sections. Wool is just more forgiving, but not nearly as easy to care for, which certainly matters when you are caring for a family. I would also knit a smaller size next time, since it seems like this runs a bit large as written. It will work out in the end, since babies have a strong tendency to grow, but I could have saved myself some stitches.
Have you worked an Ella Funt sweater? Any advice on sizing for this pattern?
